Our California Grill Anniversary Dinner Review: A Look Back at a Disney Classic

May 8, 2021

At the very top of the Contemporary Resort you will find an award-winning restaurant that is arguably one of the most sought after dining reservations on Walt Disney World Property — The California Grill. This signature dining restaurant offers Pacific Coast inspired fine dining and unbeatable views of the Seven Seas Lagoon and the Magic Kingdom. We have been lucky enough to dine in this establishment a few times over the years, and it has always been a special occasion for us. Since the menu and ambiance makes for a romantic date night we decided to book a dinner here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Read on to learn more about one of our favorite spots for a magical meal…

Contemporary Resort

About the California Grill

Location

The first thing that comes to mind when people think of the California Grill is the location and views. Located on the 15th floor of the Contemporary Resort, the restaurant provides views of the Magic Kingdom, the Seven Seas Lagoon, the Grand Floridian Resort, the Polynesian Resort, and plenty of the surrounding Floridian wetlands. Looking at the above picture you can see the restaurant sits atop of the Contemporary Resort (the building on the right) with large windows all the way around to provide amazing views for the patrons. (In non-pandemic times it is one of the best spots to see the fireworks too!) Also with an onstage kitchen in the middle of the restaurant, guests can get a peek at the innovative chefs at work.

Reservations and Checking-In

Reservations for The California Grill are highly recommended and you can make them starting 60 days out. When you arrive at the resort the Check-In area is on the second floor of the resort. Once your party is called guests ascend to the 15th floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort via private elevator.

Dress Code

It is good to note that guests are asked to adhere to the minimum dress code requirements at this Signature Dining experience. Dressier attire is also welcome. Please explore the minimum dress code requirements:

  • Men must wear khakis, slacks or dress shorts and collared shirts. Jeans may be worn if in good condition. Sport coats are optional.

  • Women must wear Capri pants, skirts, dresses or dress shorts. Jeans may be worn if in good condition.

  • Not permitted are tank tops, flip-flops, swimsuits, swimsuit cover-ups, hats for gentlemen, cut-offs, torn clothing and t-shirts with offensive language and/or graphics.

We personally find a visit to California Grill is a great excuse to get a little dressed up for the night.

Our Table in the Monterey Room

During our most recent visit we are guessing that since it was our Anniversary we may have received some Pixie Dust. Instead of being sat in the main dining area we were instead led to a smaller, more private room off to the side called the Monterey Room. With a handful of tables it made for a quiet and lovely meal and being situated facing Bay Lake we had some slightly different views. We loved seeing the wetlands and the boats go by as the sun was setting. We could also see of in the distance more landmarks such as Disney Springs, Sea World, downtown Orlando, and just about everything else between us and the airport. We truly felt spoiled on this special night with a more intimate table that was decorated for the occasion with confetti. We were even greeted once sat with some complimentary champagne for a celebratory toast!

Menu

The California Grill incorporates fresh, seasonal ingredients and the international, melting-pot culture of the Golden State. While the dinner menu changes slightly seasonally, the menu usually includes a range of options such as high-quality meat, seafood, sushi, and brick-oven fired pizza. To complement the delicious menu, guests can complement their meals with selections of over 300 hand-picked wines—most of which are from California. As well as other signature cocktails and a full bar. Read on for more details of everything we enjoyed during our dinner celebration.

Our Meal

BREAD SERVICE (complimentary)
Sour dough served with dipping oil

Andrew’s favorite bread is sour dough and we thought this was a perfect choice for a California inspired location. This fairly large loaf had a nice crust but was fluffy inside. The oil was flavorful and a great addition.

COCKTAIL: Ancho Rancho Spicy Margarita $15
Patrón Añejo Tequila, Ancho Reyes Chile Liquerur, Lime Juice, Agave Nectar

Julie loves Margaritas and a little heat and had to try this Margarita. It was a great blend of refreshing with a kick. The spicy rim and chili pepper garnish were a great addition too. It seemed a very fair price for a high quality cocktail too.

APPETIZER: A Selection of Farmhouse and Artisanal Cheeses $23
Five Unique Cheeses with Accompaniments

We started the meal with a cheese board. (Because if a cheese board is on the menu Julie has to try it.) This board included a great selection of cheese with crackers and other additions like honey, fig, and tapenade. The cheeses were all amazing to try and included (from left to right):

  • Bayley Hazen Blue - from Japer Hill Farm

  • Purple Haze - goat milk cheese with wild fennel and lavender pollen from California

  • Lamb Chopper - mature gouda-style from the Netherlands

  • La Bonne Truffle Brie - made with black truffle, salt and Mascarapone

  • Beecher’s Flagship Reserve - award winning semi-hard cow’s milk cheese from Seattle

APPETIZER: Winter Squash Soup $16
Roasted Squash, Maple Biscotti, Whipped Brie, Candied Hazelnuts

Julie loves a good butternut squash soup and this one was devine. The soup was a nice creamy blend of flavors and came with a unique sweet biscotti topped with a beautiful presentation of cheese and nuts.

APPETIZER: Braised Beef Short Rib Wontons $18
Doenjang Miso-Cola-Onion Sauce, Crispy Garlic-Chili Oil, Radish, Pickled Lotus Root

This starter Andrew ordered was so good it stood out as his favorite. The tender meat was a perfect mix of spice, sweet, and savory all wrapped up in a delicate wonton. He is still dreaming of this dish.

SUSHI: Creamsicle Roll $23
Verlasso Salmon, Yellowtail, Jicama, Cream Cheese, Ikura, Jalapeno, Zesty Florida Citrus Sauce

With all of the starters Julie chose to enjoy a simple sushi roll for dinner. When she saw this Citrus inspired sushi she knew she had to try it. It was creamy, a little spicy, and the citrus sauce added a unique touch. It was refreshing and satisfying.

ENTREE: Oak-Fired Filet of Beef $59
Root Vegetable-Apple Pavé, Leek Fondue, Fig-Onion Demi

When visiting a high end restaurant Andrew typical sticks with one of his favorites: steak. And this meal was another winner. The high quality steak was cooked perfectly and the sauce was amazing. (He did trade out the side dish for some scalloped potatoes which were cheesy and delicious.

DESSERT (complimentary)
Gelatin and mousse bites

We were so full of delicious food we opted to skip dessert but our server wouldn’t have it. He brought out this lovely little tray of bite size treats. They were fruity and delicious and the celebratory sprinkles were a nice touch.

Service

As a Signature Dining Experience and one of the flagship restaurants on property, you would expect the California Grill to have some of the best servers on property. On every visit here we have had exceptional service and this time we may have experienced one of the best servers yet.

Our server, Nasser (from Morocco) was absolutely amazing. His recommendations were spot on, and he was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. He had perfect timing when it came to serving the various courses, and was very friendly and personable. We felt so special that night as he treated us to so many magical moments from the champagne and dessert, to even a special call from Mickey Mouse himself. Thank you Nasser for a memorable meal and we hope to request you on our next visit sometime soon!

Final Thoughts

From delicious and innovative food to exceptional service we both wholeheartedly agree that California Grill is a top choice when looking for a special meal on Disney property. We had a wonderful evening celebrating our anniversary and loved every minute. The views are gorgeous and the ambiance is perfect for adults looking for a special date night. The only thing that keeps us from coming back more often is the cost (which we still believe is completely worth it), it keeps California Grill as a special once in awhile meal for us, vs a regular spot to visit all the time. Thank you California Grill for an amazing evening.

Do you remember when Planet Hollywood used to be a big blue planet with “The Jenny” boat from Forrest Gump parked outside? With the redo of Disney Springs the restaurant received a facelift in 2017 to fit the new theming and we were definitely due for a visit to see the remodel. Last week we had a hankering for some American food and went to go check out the redone Planet Hollywood Observatory which included a different menu too. When it comes to deciding on whether or not to get the Disney Dining Plan we are usually a hard pass. But on a recent trip to Walt Disney World we decided to do a little experiment. We saw an opportunity to be strategic and took on the challenge of seeing how much we could save with the priciest option: the Disney Deluxe Dining Plan. And we felt like we were drinking champagne on a beer budget (even if it was a Disney priced beer budget lol.) The last time we stayed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge we had enjoyed visiting Boma - Flavors of Africa. This restaurant resembles a lively African marketplace and features bountiful buffets at both breakfast and dinner. On non park days we tend to enjoy getting up a bit later and enjoying a later and larger breakfast. We decided on a recent trip to dine at Boma once again and wanted to share the unique offerings of this establishment. Read on for some more details and pics…

For many years Disney’s Animal Kingdom had been known as just a partial day park. Even so it had grown on us over the years with the exotic theming and the ability to explore nature trails had become a very relaxing and enjoyable experience for us. Recently there have been some newer additions to the park to include some offerings that have even extended the park hours longer than before. On our recent trip to the world we were excited to check out some of these newer offerings and for the first time stay in Animal Kingdom later than a 5pm close time. We decided to book a dining package to experience the River of Lights night show for the first time. Read on for a review of our meal and the show…

On our recent visit to Walt Disney World we were extended a gracious invitation to dine at Wine Bar George, the only Master Sommelier-led wine bar in Florida, which happens to be located in Disney Springs. This new-ish dining location opened earlier this spring and we were very excited to finally go check it out. We stopped by for a late Sunday afternoon lunch to try some drinks, share some plates, and decide if this is a must visit location for foodie Disney loving adults.

After all the years visiting Walt Disney World, we had actually never made it to Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival. Recently some work travel popped up for Andrew in Orlando, and we decided to plan a quick weekend trip. After a late night at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party we woke up on Saturday to head over and check out the festival. It was an unusually hot day, but beautiful and sunny. We weren’t sure what to expect but made sure to show up hungry. Read on for a recap of our day, plenty of foodie pics, and five main lessons learned...

Update: Why We Changed Our Name to The Orlando DINKs

Yup, you read that correctly, after 6 years of being known as The Disney DINKs, we are officially changing our name to The Orlando DINKs.

While changing one word doesn’t seem like a huge change, it feels pretty huge to us since this has been our identity for so long. There are a few reasons why we decided to make the change, some of which are directly related to Disney and some that aren’t. Before we really get into it, we want to be very clear that this article isn’t an intent to bash Disney by any means. We have had amazing experiences related to Disney, from our wedding, multiple Anniversary trips on both coasts, and Disneyland Paris. Being Disney Vacation Club members has allowed us to experience some amazing destinations including Hawaii, Hilton Head Island, and Vero Beach. None of these would have been possible without DVC. We have also had the pleasure of sharing these experiences with friends and family throughout the years. So while it may seem like we are quitting Disney, we certainly are not (and please note we are even keeping our fun mouse ear branding!) Read on to learn more…

Moving Near the Mouse: Moving to Orlando to be a Disney Local
Moving Near the Mouse: Moving to Orlando to be a Disney Local

Everyone dreams about moving to their happy place whether it be the country, the mountains, or, in our case, near the house of the mouse. Last year we were able to make our dreams a reality and left Maryland to start a new chapter in Orlando. It’s hard to believe it, but we have now been Floridians for one year! We wanted to take a look back at this last year and chat about:

  • How we pulled off a big cross country move last year

  • What we are loving and missing now being in FL

  • A peek into our home (with several before and after projects!)

  • and finally, how our Disney habits have changed now being locals

Setting Sail on a Disney Specialty Cruise with a Private Fireworks View

With the July 4th fireworks at Walt Disney World canceled this year, we figured it was the perfect time to reminisce about a special fireworks experience we had last fall. We are always amazed at the amount of special activities and tours available at Disney and booking a private specialty fireworks cruise was one awesome time. Technically our friends Max and Niki had booked the experience for their honeymoon, but they let us crash the party and come along (how nice are they right?). One night last fall our group of four enjoyed some drinks at the Top of the World then set sail on our private pontoon. Read on to hear all about our enchanted evening sailing.

Is Disney Vacation Club Worth It? A DVC Review & Guide

If you have read some of our resort reviews before, you may have figured out that we are Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members. We have been blue card holders since 2013 and have used our membership in various ways. We find that we get a lot of questions about DVC, with the most frequent being “Is DVC worth it?” It can be a bit confusing at first to figure out how the membership exactly works so we wanted to break it down for our readers. With this article we will be covering…

Our Story: Why We Started The Disney DINKs Blog (Dual Income, No Kids & Disney Travel!)
Our Story: Why We Started The Disney DINKs Blog (Dual Income, No Kids & Disney Travel!)

We were recently asked to participate in a “Disney Friends Blog Hop” for people to discover other Disney blogs in the community. (You can learn a little more about that at the the bottom of this post!) We also realized with many new visitors recently it may be a good time to share a bit more about the two authors behind the posts. There are two things we tend to get asked pretty frequently. Many people are curious of how we decided to launch a Disney based blog geared towards an adult crowd. Many people are also curious about the term “DINKs” (Dual Income No Kids) and we wanted to touch a bit on our journey to decide to be childfree. So here is a little peek into the world of Julie and Andrew…
