The Ultimate Guide to a Summer Disney Road Trip

June 16, 2021

If you're planning to spend your summer vacation on a road trip and experience the magic of Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, one big and exciting adventure is ahead of you! While we personally live just down the road from the house of mouse, we know many of our readers are not as close. Our friend Lindsay has put together this great guest post on preparing for a drive to the parks. Use this ultimate guide to a summer Disney road trip to plan your vacation without stress and focus on things that will guarantee you a great time.

Choose the length of your trip and book a hotel in advance

When you're taking a road trip, you want to enjoy the scenery along the way. So, the first thing you should do is look at the map and find out how many hours it takes to travel from your home to Walt Disney World. Then, make an initial plan and decide how many days you will be on the road. If you really want to enjoy your trip, don't drive more than five hours a day.

Keep your needs in mind, as well as the needs of your travel companions. Some will need more frequent breaks than others. However, you should plan to arrive at Disney World in the late afternoon. Then, you'll be able to check in and relax in the hotel of your choice before you spend a full day in the parks. Choose the hotel inside or outside the Disney resort area, according to your budget and preferences.

Prepare your car for a safe trip

Before taking your summer Disney road trip, you should inspect your car and get it ready:

  1. Check the tires and replace any that are worn.

  2. Check if any fluids need filling.

  3. Clean the inside of your car and make sure everything is cozy and pleasant since you're going to spend a lot of time in it.

  4. Take your car to a professional to check all parts of the engine and replace anything that might be necessary before your trip.

Ensure you have anything you might need for your vehicle while you’re on the road, such as:

  •  Jack

  • Roadside emergency kit

  • Extra fluids (a radiator fluid - antifreeze and windshield washer fluid)

  • A windshield reflector for the summer heat, etc.

Before a road trip, take your car to a mechanic.

Pack wisely

When you've checked your car thoroughly and made sure it's completely safe to drive, it's time for packing. First, pack your summer clothes, such as comfy T-shirts and shorts. Then, pack a cooler with bottled water and juices, fresh fruits, and some snacks for the road. Take your travel pillows and blankets for napping in the back seat. Also, pack some things for entertainment, such as a portable DVD player, etc. Make sure to pack these essential items and bring them with you throughout the theme parks, to endure summer heat in Orlando:

  • Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Summer hat

  • Hand fan, etc.

You’ll certainly want to capture some of the best moments in Disney World, so bring your camera along with a camera charger and a few extra batteries.

Make sure to add some Disney fun to your suitcase too!

Rent storage while traveling

Going on a trip without worries is priceless. So, no matter how long your road trip will be, you can have your possessions stored while you have fun. Just find a suitable storage unit with climate control and security, and rest assured that your items will be safe and secure in good hands. Then you'll be able to truly relax and enjoy your Disney vacation to the fullest.

Find ways to beat the heat

The challenging part about a summer trip to Disney World is dealing with the heat, but there are many ways to ensure that you have a great experience despite the rising temperatures.

Manage your time

It's essential to come early to the park, so you'll already experience a lot by lunchtime. So, when the sun becomes too much to handle, head back to your hotel and relax for a few hours. You can take a nap, go for a swim in the pool, read a book, or just watch TV for a while. Luckily, Disney parks are open late into the night, so you can come back after the rest with more energy and enjoy cooler temperatures and more fun.

Dress lightly

During hot summer days and your Disney World vacation, always wear light-colored clothing made from breathable fabrics. Also, wear comfy leather sandals or other shoes that will let your toes breathe.

Stay hydrated

You should opt to stay hydrated and cool throughout the day to avoid fainting or sun poisoning. Make sure you always have a bottle of cold water and other above-mentioned items that will help you to beat the heat.

Head indoors

When the heat becomes unbearable, head indoors, where many of Walt Disney World’s top rides are located. You'll enjoy indoor rides such as Space Mountain, The Haunted Mansion, Toy Story Midway Mania, Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster, and much more.

Skip the lines

There’s also a possibility to skip many waiting lines and hop right on the most popular rides if you purchase the Genie+ service.

Visit water parks

Walt Disney World also offers cool summer thrills - water parks, such as Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach.

Eat well during your summer Disney road trip

Disney World is filled with great food choices. Since you're visiting during the summer, eat a healthy breakfast in the morning for prolonged energy throughout the day. It should consist of a healthy protein source and some fruits or vegetables. That will be your fuel for the day full of rides and adventures. Eat lightly throughout the day at the park and avoid tempting foods that obviously don't contain the nutritional value you need, such as fried foods and desserts. That can only slow you down, so try those when your day in the park is over.

Make sure to splurge on Mickey waffles one day too!

Final thoughts

When you take a road trip, you'll have all the freedom that having a car affords, so use it to your best advantage. For example, visit the Orlando area and its highlights in addition to the Disney resort. There are some great restaurants in the area, as well as Disney outlet stores that can fit every budget. We hope that you find this guide to a summer Disney road trip helpful and that you'll have an awesome trip and make unforgettable memories!
