A Pirate's Life for Me! How to Party Like Jack Sparrow (Decor, Food & Fun!)

June 12, 2017

Completing a Master's degree definitely calls for a party. We decided the perfect inspiration would be the newest Pirates of the Caribbean movie to honor Captain Andrew's accomplishments. We had a blast buying all sorts of themed items for a swashbuckling good time. There was plenty of grub, grog and great friends. Although at the end of the night we still found ourselves saying "Why is the run always gone?" Here are the party planning details...

Decorations

First we had to set the scene. There were some things we had around the house that worked well for the theme. Some ideas included rum bottles, dish ware, Halloween skeleton decor, candles, etc. Then we layered in some purchased items such as:

  • A few large pirate flags such as this official Jack Sparrow flag

  • We hung up movie posters and vintage Disney attraction posters

  • Fish netting from the Dollar Store

  • Chocolate coins from a candy store

  • Skull themed paper supplies from a party store (plates, napkins, cups, etc.)

  • This awesome Pirate Ship Cupcake Stand and matching Cupcake Kit

Then Julie designed some custom paper goods such as:

  • Pirate graphics to place in frames

  • Signage to direct guests around the house

  • Food labels

  • Party Straws

The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Pirate's of the Caribbean inspired table design.
Frames with pirate inspired photos.

Food & Drink

With a party comes lots of delicious food and drink. We wanted items that was on theme and created a pretty robust menu of main dishes, sides, snacks, desserts and drinks:

  • Jack's Jerk Chicken Wings

  • Plundering Pulled Pork

  • Pirate Shaped Pasta Salad

  • Captain's Coleslaw

  • Sparrows' Shrimp

  • Captain's Cheese Platter

  • Salazar's Salsa & Guac

  • Forbidden Fruit Salad

  • Peg Leg Veggies & Dip

  • Individual bags of Pirate Booty

  • Ocean themed gummies

  • Blackbeard's Brownies

  • Drunken Rum Cupcakes (these were amazing, check out the recipe HERE)

  • Seven Seas Jello Shooters

  • Rum Runner Punch

  • Other Rums like Cocoblast from Captain Morgan

  • Wench Wines

  • Assorted Beers (we found great sea inspired brands like Heavy Seas, Loose Cannon and Landshark)

  • Fountain of Youth Water

Different foods in one table.
Seaven Seas Shooters Drink
Pirates of the Caribbean Logo inspired cupcakes.

Then finally there were some other details that really pulled the evening together:

Costumes

We scored some fun Pirate costumes for 50% off at an after Halloween sale. To complete the look we ordered an official captain hat for Andrew from Disney Parks. We encouraged our guests to dress up if they wish and some truly went all out. We also knew some friends would come casual so we made sure to stock up on some bandanas, eye patches and a few other goodies for anyone who wanted to get a little more on theme when they arrived.

Activities

We prepped some action stations upon arrival such as a photo booth with an ocean backdrop with some props like plastic weapons and an inflatable parrot. We also set up a "Tattoo Parlor" with temporary tattoos, spray bottle and directions. Some people got a little crazy inking themselves up! We put out some Pirate games like Liar's Dice and cards and then set up "Cannon Pong" in the garage for later in the evening.

Final Details

We had the movie soundtracks playing as people entered the house and then had Island style music on in the main party area. We also scored some fun swag from our movie screening reps to give out to guests. Thanks Allied Integrated Marketing for the mini movie posters, temporary tattoos and branded bandanas, they were a hit!

Earlier this week we were very excited to attend the opening night of “Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment” in our home town of Baltimore, MD. This wasn’t our first time at a Disney On Ice show but it had been quite awhile. We have found that most people who talk about these shows see them as total kid events and wouldn’t think to go. But we don’t find that is the case at all. Here is a review of our evening out and some reasons why we recommend Disney On Ice for adult fans…

Most people have probably figured out by now that we are big fans of Disney branded entertainment. Whether a Disney movie, a Broadway play, or an in-park show we always find the performance quality to be top notch and all the creativity put into the show is super impressive. One show that most people assume is just for kids, we as adults actually love… Disney On Ice! This ice show comes to town a couple times of year and we think it is a great way to get a little dose of Disney magic when your next trip is a bit too far away. We make a date night out of it and grab dinner then catch the show to enjoy the ice dancing, music, and seeing favorite characters. Read on for upcoming show info and a coupon for tickets!..

When we traveled to Walt Disney World a couple of years ago during the holiday season we had such a fantastic time that we decided to plan to visit again this year! One of the highlights for us during this time is attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (MVMCP). This is a an after hours special event (just like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party), and while a party like this may sound like it’s just for kids, we actually think it’s an even better event for adults with later hours (and the perfect way to kick off the holiday season!). So read on for our reasons MVMCP is a must do (and a few planning tips!).

Last weekend we planned a somewhat last minute trip to Walt Disney World and decided a great way to enjoy the time of year was to attend Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. When an event is called “Not So Scary” and includes trick-or-treating you would assume it is just for kids. But in true Disney fashion this special ticketed event is for everyone and a great way for adults to kick back and feel like a kid again. Being a limited experience it is best to get the most our of this event, so we have created a list of the best ways to enjoy this event as adults. Read on and get ready to party!

Enjoy Some Disney Valentine's Day Fun (Beyond the Dinner Reservations!)
Disney at Home

It may surprise some, but we actually don't make a big to-do about Valentine's Day. Now we do think celebrating love is super important but this holiday just gets a little low-key attention from us. And honestly we would rather save the money spent on a day like Valentine's Day and spend it on a Disney trip together. We both are romantics at heart and do love a good Disney love story so we couldn't help but dig up some links to Disney themed Valentine fun. Enjoy!

Update: Why We Changed Our Name to The Orlando DINKs

Yup, you read that correctly, after 6 years of being known as The Disney DINKs, we are officially changing our name to The Orlando DINKs.

While changing one word doesn’t seem like a huge change, it feels pretty huge to us since this has been our identity for so long. There are a few reasons why we decided to make the change, some of which are directly related to Disney and some that aren’t. Before we really get into it, we want to be very clear that this article isn’t an intent to bash Disney by any means. We have had amazing experiences related to Disney, from our wedding, multiple Anniversary trips on both coasts, and Disneyland Paris. Being Disney Vacation Club members has allowed us to experience some amazing destinations including Hawaii, Hilton Head Island, and Vero Beach. None of these would have been possible without DVC. We have also had the pleasure of sharing these experiences with friends and family throughout the years. So while it may seem like we are quitting Disney, we certainly are not (and please note we are even keeping our fun mouse ear branding!) Read on to learn more…

Moving Near the Mouse: Moving to Orlando to be a Disney Local

Everyone dreams about moving to their happy place whether it be the country, the mountains, or, in our case, near the house of the mouse. Last year we were able to make our dreams a reality and left Maryland to start a new chapter in Orlando. It’s hard to believe it, but we have now been Floridians for one year! We wanted to take a look back at this last year and chat about:

  • How we pulled off a big cross country move last year

  • What we are loving and missing now being in FL

  • A peek into our home (with several before and after projects!)

  • and finally, how our Disney habits have changed now being locals

Setting Sail on a Disney Specialty Cruise with a Private Fireworks View

With the July 4th fireworks at Walt Disney World canceled this year, we figured it was the perfect time to reminisce about a special fireworks experience we had last fall. We are always amazed at the amount of special activities and tours available at Disney and booking a private specialty fireworks cruise was one awesome time. Technically our friends Max and Niki had booked the experience for their honeymoon, but they let us crash the party and come along (how nice are they right?). One night last fall our group of four enjoyed some drinks at the Top of the World then set sail on our private pontoon. Read on to hear all about our enchanted evening sailing.

Is Disney Vacation Club Worth It? A DVC Review & Guide

If you have read some of our resort reviews before, you may have figured out that we are Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members. We have been blue card holders since 2013 and have used our membership in various ways. We find that we get a lot of questions about DVC, with the most frequent being “Is DVC worth it?” It can be a bit confusing at first to figure out how the membership exactly works so we wanted to break it down for our readers. Our Story: Why We Started The Disney DINKs Blog (Dual Income, No Kids & Disney Travel!)

We were recently asked to participate in a “Disney Friends Blog Hop” for people to discover other Disney blogs in the community. (You can learn a little more about that at the the bottom of this post!) We also realized with many new visitors recently it may be a good time to share a bit more about the two authors behind the posts. There are two things we tend to get asked pretty frequently. Many people are curious of how we decided to launch a Disney based blog geared towards an adult crowd. Many people are also curious about the term “DINKs” (Dual Income No Kids) and we wanted to touch a bit on our journey to decide to be childfree. So here is a little peek into the world of Julie and Andrew…
