The Incredibles are back! (Can you believe it's been fourteen years?)

Incredibles 2 Movie Review: Is This Pixar Sequel Truly Super?

June 14, 2018

Flash back to 2004: Pixar's The Incredibles grossed more than $633 million worldwide and won an Academy Award® for best animated feature film of the year. We had both seen the original film many years ago and enjoyed the concept of what happens when a pair of super heroes ends up having a family and kids to worry about. The sequel has been a long time coming and we were curious to see what the latest chapter would have in store for the incredible Parr family.

Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and Frozone meet with new characters Winston and Evelyn.

Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and Frozone meet with new characters Winston and Evelyn.

Official film synopsis:

In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose super powers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.

Written and directed by Brad Bird (“Iron Giant,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille”) and produced by John Walker (“The Incredibles,” “Tomorrowland”) and Nicole Grindle (“Sanjay’s Super Team” short, “Toy Story 3” associate producer), Disney•Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” busts into theaters on June 15, 2018.

Julie's Thoughts

I had always loved the story behind The Incredibles, it was kind of like getting a glimpse of what would happen if Superman got married and moved to the 'burbs. I was curious to see what would happen in the next installment, and it pretty much picks up where the last left off. The Parr family is handling some life obstacles such as having to live in a motel after their house was destroyed by a jet, Helen and Bob are figuring out careers, Violet is navigating young teen life and Dash is lost in common core math. Pretty much your average family with some super powers thrown in the mix.

The Incredibles and their friend Frozone are approached by a tycoon interested in lobbying for laws to be changed to make super heroes legal again. Mrs. Incredible gets thrown into the spotlight as the new face of the campaign, leaving Mr. Incredible at home to play Mr. Dad. I enjoyed the female powered action scenes along with the touching daily family life scenes. I also always love the fabulous Edna character who had a a couple scenes as well. New characters were thrown into the mix such as the brother/sister tycoon duo, some new Supers and a creepy villain who utilizes technology to cause terror.

I thought the whole movie did a great job of continuing to tell the story of the Parr family while introducing new ideas. The animation as great as always and I enjoyed some of the retro flair mixed in with the high tech digital such as the city having vintage cars and some cool old fashion hero theme music during the credits. Incredibles 2 is certainly a super sequel in my book. Make sure your summer plans include this incredibly well done new Disney•Pixar hit!

HER RATING: 4.0 out of 5.0 "Super Masks"

HER RATING: 4.0 out of 5.0 "Super Masks"

Andrew's Thoughts

I liked the first Incredible's enough to see it a few times but that was about it. It actually might rank in the bottom half of my list of favorite Pixar movies. Having said that, I was only mildly excited about seeing this movie. But it turns out I enjoyed Incredibles 2 far more than I expected to.

Since the characters and setting is already established, the storyline of Incredible's 2 is able to move a whole lot faster. The pacing may have been a reason I was just luke warm towards The Incredibles, where this latest installment was packed full of action that I enjoyed. Throw in a heavy dose of comedic scenes and this film now ranks on my list of top ten Pixar Movies. A sequel is hard to do, one that beats out the original is nothing short of super!

I wanted to give it a slightly higher rating but two things kept me from doing so. The first was the plot was somewhat predictable, especially figuring out who the villain was. The second was a few lines in the movie that seemed to want to prove a point, but they just seemed out of place or just plain unnecessary in this setting, especially one towards the end of the movie. But the things I loved about the move outweighed these few things. There were some great action hero scenes and many funny moments (I honestly was surprised of how much I enjoyed scenes with the baby Jack-Jack). Way to go Disney•Pixar for a great new flick!

HIS RATING: 4.0 out of 5.0 "Super Masks"

HIS RATING: 4.0 out of 5.0 "Super Masks"

This movie is best for: movie goers of all ages who would to see a fast moving and funny animated film. We would recommend seeing The Incredibles first to know the character backstories.

It seems everyone has been anticipating and talking about Director Christopher Nolans’s new film: Oppenheimer. Andrew has been so excited. As a World War II history enthusiast he couldn’t wait to see the story about the creator of the atom bomb. To be honest this wasn’t even on Julie’s radar, but she is always down for a good historical drama. We are both fans of the director’s previous work, and the cast seemed jam packed with talented folks. Let’s dig into what we thought…

As kids growing up during the early years of Nintendo, we are both very familiar with Mario and friends. We spent many hours conquering level after level, and saw the evolution from 8 bit to more advanced graphics. (We even remember a terrible live action movie at one point that was such a let down…) So, when we heard a new movie was in the works we were really intrigued to see if this one would do justice to a nostalgic childhood franchise. We were also excited to see how the story would develop and to see this video game on the big screen. Read on to hear both of our thoughts of the The Super Mario Bros. Movie…

As kids growing up in the 90’s, the Jurassic Park series had always stood out as a favorite. Andrew was especially a fan of the franchise. While it was hard for the second and third films to stand up to the original, when Jurassic World was released years later in 2015 we were in awe. Rekindling this iconic storyline with new faces and updated technology in the mix was great. We have been enjoying the latest story line and couldn’t wait for the epic conclusion of the Jurassic World trilogy of movies. So how was the ending to this iconic franchise? We are both really big Pixar fans so when we heard a new movie was coming out we were pretty excited. To be honest though, we hadn’t seen too much marketing about Onward or really know what this new story was about. When we were invited to an early screening we went in knowing not much more than this was a story about two brother on a magical adventure. We discovered this story had a lot of interesting facets. Movie Review, Star Wars, Walt Disney Studios

Growing up we both were intimately familiar with Star Wars Episodes IV, V, and VI and practically wore out the VHS tapes. While we wouldn’t call ourselves super fans, Star Wars has always been enjoyable and held a special place in our hearts; when the franchise was acquired by Disney it just felt right to us. We recently went on a Star Wars movie marathon (thanks Disney+!) to gear up for the last installment. It was so enjoyable to watch films we hadn’t see in years and really get clear on characters and details. We were also reminded how “The Last Jedi” felt a bit mediocre to us. With plot holes and silly moments it felt a little fluffy, but it also felt like it was building for the final chapter.

We were excited to hear that for “The Rise of Skywalker” J.J. Abrams was back at the helm. But we knew he had his hands full to not only include nostalgia from all the movies previously, but also bring in new exciting moments, and tie up a lot of loose ends. When we were invited to an early screening of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker we felt a big build up of excitement and nerves. This could be the final goodbye to many beloved characters (including ones that had been around since before we were even born!) Maleficent has always been one of the most memorable Disney villains and we had really enjoyed when Disney developed the live action “Maleficent.” Unlike some of the other movies that stuck close to the original story, this movie offered a unique and memorable twist. 2019 has certainly been the year for Disney to make 90’s kids excited! In Disney’s latest live action, the animals of 1994 The Lion King are brought to life. This classic was a favorite for both of us growing up, so needless to say we have been pretty excited for this one. This week we were invited to an advanced screening of the film, but unfortunately Andrew couldn’t attend due to a work conflict. Julie decided to still go check it out anyway (sorry Andrew!). First can we just say the Disney slate of live action movies this year is mind blowing! Dumbo officially kicks off 2019 with a reimagined story based on the 1941 Oscar-winning Disney classic. While we had both seen the original cartoon as kids, neither of us could remember the entire story. But Dumbo is such an iconic and classic character you can’t help but smile when you see the little guy, and who doesn’t love the Dumbo ride in the parks? With Tim Burton in charge, and state-of-the-art visual effects being used to portray Dumbo and many of his four-legged counterparts, we were intrigued to see if this new version would soar or crash. Last night we were able to attend an early screening of the show, read on for our thoughts…

Update: Why We Changed Our Name to The Orlando DINKs

Yup, you read that correctly, after 6 years of being known as The Disney DINKs, we are officially changing our name to The Orlando DINKs.

While changing one word doesn’t seem like a huge change, it feels pretty huge to us since this has been our identity for so long. There are a few reasons why we decided to make the change, some of which are directly related to Disney and some that aren’t. Before we really get into it, we want to be very clear that this article isn’t an intent to bash Disney by any means. We have had amazing experiences related to Disney, from our wedding, multiple Anniversary trips on both coasts, and Disneyland Paris. Being Disney Vacation Club members has allowed us to experience some amazing destinations including Hawaii, Hilton Head Island, and Vero Beach. None of these would have been possible without DVC. We have also had the pleasure of sharing these experiences with friends and family throughout the years. So while it may seem like we are quitting Disney, we certainly are not (and please note we are even keeping our fun mouse ear branding!) Read on to learn more…
