Julie and Andrew with Ocean on the Background

Our DINKs Love Story: An Anniversary Flight to Ocean City, MD!

July 1, 2018

The Disney DINKs Love Story

Once upon a time, many years ago, there lived a girl named Julie, who was busy attending college and having fun for the summer. She was going to head to the beach and spend some time with friends. Julie's dad Steve, a part owner of a flight school, knew of a young man named Andrew who was one of his favorite pilots. Julie and Andrew knew of each other, but didn't really know each other, so Steve thought he should change that. He asked Andrew if he was available to take Julie to the beach that day by plane. His plan was genius: more flight hours for Andrew, and no driving for Julie, who could refuse? So on June 16 the two took off to the ocean and during the flight got to know each other a little more. A week later after Julie had returned she asked Andrew if she could take him out to dinner to say thank you. Needless to say that was the beginning of their fairytale romance and the rest is history. So while June 23 marks the official anniversary of their first date, June 16, the day of the flight, is really what started it all.

When Andrew saw that June 16 would mark 15 years since that original flight, he decided it was the perfect opportunity to celebrate. The date fell on a Saturday this year and the same model of plane was available to schedule. And what better way to commemorate the day then by heading to the same flight destination that started it all: Ocean City, Maryland. He made the reservation and couldn't wait to surprise Julie with the fun plans.

An Anniversary Flight

The weather that Saturday turned out to be a perfect day for flying; not too hot, very smooth, and great visibility. We also learned a few days prior that there would be an air show taking place along the ocean the same day for an added bonus. We took off from KGAI to head "downy ocean hon". Along the way we were able to see some sights like the Washington Monument, the Bay Bridge and pretty East Coast landscapes below us.

Welcome to Ocean City, MD

Upon landing it was a little chaotic at the airport with many people in town for the show. We luckily were able to get a parking spot and then wrangled up an Uber to head down to the main beach area. We were dropped off at the very start of the boardwalk area and the first thing we did was get some ice cream from Dumser's Dairyland, a well known shop with numerous locations in the area to include multiples on the boardwalk. We wandered around the pier a bit and then started heading north along the boardwalk to stop in some shops, people watch and see some sights along the way on this gorgeous summer day.

After walking about a mile up to around 2nd Street, we decide it was time for some lunch. We ended up at the Mug & Mallet restaurant right on the boardwalk. It looked a bit like a hole in the wall but many people were eating crabs so we figured we would give it a try. Julie ordered a Crush, a popular local libation that typically features crushed ice, orange vodka and fresh orange juice. She mixed it up by trying a "Green Tea Crush", which featured Jameson Whiskey, Peach Schnapps, fresh squeezed lemon and lemon-lime soda, which was quite tasty. We got an order of crab dip and fish and chips to share which we found really delicious. The Mug & Mallet doesn't get much love on Yelp but we found it a great spot, especially for the price considering it is located on the boardwalk.

Here for the Air Show

After lunch, we continued walking north along the boardwalk. The air show had started mid day and while the main activities were in the middle of the boardwalk the planes were flying up and down the whole strip of beach so everyone could have a good view. There were many demonstrations to include a few WWII warbirds, a P-51 Mustang, F35 Joint Strike Fighter, and paratroopers. The main event featured the Air Force Thunderbirds. There were some epic flight patterns and displays to watch. The show was super entertaining and we snagged some great pics.

Beach Please

When the show wrapped up, we started to feel a bit tired from a fairly long day in the sun so we figured we could start slowly heading back. We had packed some beach gear but it almost seemed like too much effort to change and apply sunscreen to then hop back in the plane all sticky. We figured we would at least spend some time strolling along the water on the way back. The water was a little chilly but really refreshing with the hot sun beating down.

Ocean City Maryland

After making our way back to the inlet, we stopped by a few more shops and the arcade to get a fortune.  Then we made our way back to the plane. After saying a quick thank you to the staff at the airport, we hopped in the Cessna 172, fired it up, and headed for home.

While we didn't do a ton while visiting, we had a relaxing time just walking up and down the boardwalk, enjoying the sights, sounds, and food. It was a great way to commemorate that special day 15 years ago that started it all. Here's to the next 15 years (and many more) of adventure!

Heartwarming Flight: Rescuing Hurricane Florence Puppies with Pilots N Paws

Last month we had booked a trip to visit Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort. We had also scheduled a Pilots’n’Paws rescue flight on the way home to bring a German Shepherd back from South Carolina to the the D.C. metro area. Unfortunately Hurricane Florence had other plans, and our whole trip was canceled. When a natural disaster hits, there are usually many animals that need to be transported to new locations. So last weekend when the same rescue organization reached out about a couple puppies needing to be moved from a post hurricane area, we jumped at the chance to help out. Keep reading to learn more about our flight path that day (and for some really cute puppy pics!)

Update: Why We Changed Our Name to The Orlando DINKs

Yup, you read that correctly, after 6 years of being known as The Disney DINKs, we are officially changing our name to The Orlando DINKs.

While changing one word doesn’t seem like a huge change, it feels pretty huge to us since this has been our identity for so long. There are a few reasons why we decided to make the change, some of which are directly related to Disney and some that aren’t. Before we really get into it, we want to be very clear that this article isn’t an intent to bash Disney by any means. We have had amazing experiences related to Disney, from our wedding, multiple Anniversary trips on both coasts, and Disneyland Paris. Being Disney Vacation Club members has allowed us to experience some amazing destinations including Hawaii, Hilton Head Island, and Vero Beach. None of these would have been possible without DVC. We have also had the pleasure of sharing these experiences with friends and family throughout the years. So while it may seem like we are quitting Disney, we certainly are not (and please note we are even keeping our fun mouse ear branding!) Read on to learn more…

Moving Near the Mouse: Moving to Orlando to be a Disney Local

Everyone dreams about moving to their happy place whether it be the country, the mountains, or, in our case, near the house of the mouse. Last year we were able to make our dreams a reality and left Maryland to start a new chapter in Orlando. It’s hard to believe it, but we have now been Floridians for one year! We wanted to take a look back at this last year and chat about:

  • How we pulled off a big cross country move last year

  • What we are loving and missing now being in FL

  • A peek into our home (with several before and after projects!)

  • and finally, how our Disney habits have changed now being locals

Setting Sail on a Disney Specialty Cruise with a Private Fireworks View

With the July 4th fireworks at Walt Disney World canceled this year, we figured it was the perfect time to reminisce about a special fireworks experience we had last fall. We are always amazed at the amount of special activities and tours available at Disney and booking a private specialty fireworks cruise was one awesome time. Technically our friends Max and Niki had booked the experience for their honeymoon, but they let us crash the party and come along (how nice are they right?). One night last fall our group of four enjoyed some drinks at the Top of the World then set sail on our private pontoon. Read on to hear all about our enchanted evening sailing.

Is Disney Vacation Club Worth It? A DVC Review & Guide

If you have read some of our resort reviews before, you may have figured out that we are Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members. We have been blue card holders since 2013 and have used our membership in various ways. We find that we get a lot of questions about DVC, with the most frequent being “Is DVC worth it?” It can be a bit confusing at first to figure out how the membership exactly works so we wanted to break it down for our readers. Our Story: Why We Started The Disney DINKs Blog (Dual Income, No Kids & Disney Travel!)

We were recently asked to participate in a “Disney Friends Blog Hop” for people to discover other Disney blogs in the community. (You can learn a little more about that at the the bottom of this post!) We also realized with many new visitors recently it may be a good time to share a bit more about the two authors behind the posts. There are two things we tend to get asked pretty frequently. Many people are curious of how we decided to launch a Disney based blog geared towards an adult crowd. Many people are also curious about the term “DINKs” (Dual Income No Kids) and we wanted to touch a bit on our journey to decide to be childfree. So here is a little peek into the world of Julie and Andrew…
